Disclaimer: I’m in the process of updating this house tour. Please excuse some oft he very old photos and general mess.
Welcome to our humble, rented, home in the suburbs of Beijing, China! We have lived in our 3 level townhome for about 1 1/2 years now. It is nestled in a little community where all the houses look pretty much exactly the same and the playgrounds are in desperate need of repair. If this house were just about anywhere else in the world it would probably not register as remotely impressive. However in China, where apartment style living and cramped living quarters are basically the norm, we feel pretty lucky to have a little bit of space to stretch out in. Even if we have to cope with hideous tile jobs (oh…you’ll see…just wait) and drafty windows. It is definitely a work in progress…but do you wanna come inside a take a peek around?
When you enter in the front door you land smack dab in the living room area.
Now have a seat on the couch and here is your view.
Just ignore the bags, cords and token random toys hiding under the furniture. A professional stylist and photographer, I am not. Behind the couch, there is a little desk/office area. Brado can be found there on most nights while I am
generally always nestled up in the corner section of the couch under a blanket.
Here is a view of the living room looking back towards the front door.
Not huge…but it is comfy for us. From the living room, you walk directly into the dining area.
Here is the view looking out from the kitchen.
This is the view looking towards the kitchen.
Off the dining room, there is a door to our back deck and “yard”. As you will soon see using the word yard is a bit of a stretch. Really we have a small deck and a cement patio. However, in China terms, we have a yard and it is kinda amazing.
Never mind that it is totally dirty and unusable for a good 6+ months out of the year. For those 3 months when we can use it (and are in the country), we love it!
Back inside, you enter into the kitchen off the dining room. Would you believe me if I told you that people come over to our house and are super jealous that we “have such a nice kitchen”?
Yup. This sea green, teeny-tiny kitchen is a real looker in these parts. I wish I was kidding.
What I love about it is that there is just so much counter space. It is hard to know what to do with all the room. Please note that the dishwasher does not actually work and the washing machine is in the bottom right hand corner of the above photo. Where is the dryer, you ask? Dryer? That, my friends, is a luxury of the west. Over here, we hang our clothes to dry and we hate every second of it.
See what I mean? So spacious and so dang green. Okay enough of level one, let’s go upstairs.
When you get to the top of the stairs you are staring straight ahead into a little landing that we use as our playroom. To the right is a little bookcase nook.
To the immediate left is Beau’s room and further down the hall to the left is the bathroom (I forgot that there is also a bathroom on level one…it is nothing special…I promise).
The playroom is actually one of our favorite rooms in the house. Just comfy and…well…playful.
Right off the playroom is Beau beau’s room, also a favorite because it is just so him.
Down the hall is the bathroom. As with all the bathrooms in this house, they are unimpressive and filled with lots of mismatched tile. After unsuccessfully trying every possible strategy to disguise this, I have basically stopped caring about what they look like.
Okay…now it is time for level 3. Before we venture up there though please understand this level is seriously UNDER CONSTRUCTION in the most major of ways! So. much. to. do.
Dismal….I know. Here is the view from the top of the staircase looking down.
At the top of the stairs, you enter into Finley’s room. The white wardrobes come with the house and are, unfortunately, not something we can remove. Not sure if you can tell from this photo but they are HUGE and take up a lot of space in a pretty tiny room.
I am beyond excited to decorate this little room. I have some ideas floating around just need some time to actually get it all done.
Right next door to the nursery is the Master Bedroom. I say Master Bedroom but I am pretty sure Beau’s room is the exact same size.
And the Master Bath. Try not to be jealous.
Okay folks. That is all she wrote. We do actually have a basement too but our ayi (nanny) lives down there and I don’t want to be the creeper who is sneaking around taking photos of someone’s living space and posting them online.
So, one of the reasons why I wanted to post this house tour is so we could track how our house changes and (hopefully) improves over time. I am such a sucker for a good before and after photo. #toomuchhgtv So be on the lookout for little updates here and there.
Now go get yourself a glass of wine…if you made it to the end of this post…you’ve earned it!
